Remember that scam TV program, Channel One which was introduced to the classrooms of America a few years ago? The deal was there would be ten minutes of news and public affairs programming along with two minutes of ads. Part of the deal was that schools airing Channel One programming would receive approximately $30,000 worth of audiovisual equipment for regular school use. Well, guess what? The public affairs program airing daily in more than 350,000 U.S. classrooms apparently is not reaching its intended audience. According to a study in the new issue of Pediatrics magazine, the students surveyed had a stronger recall of the ads than the programming. According to Pediatrics, “Advocates [for the program] assert that it increases public-affairs knowledge, but critics charge that it garners a captive audience for teen-targeted advertising.” Well, hello! Channel One is a business, which means their primary function is to make money. What the heck has this got to do with education? Welcome to America! ![]()
Ok, I've seen the news, I've watched the ads, what time are the cartoons on?
