Reading in today’s BrandWeek that 3Com Corp., Marlborough, Mass., has appointed two new executives to lead the company's sales and marketing efforts reminded me of when I used to work on the account in the days when they were based in Silicon Valley. The agency I was freelancing for at the time had been tasked by the client to make their brand a “Household Name!” My first question was why would anyone care? 3Com makes networking equipment. It’s like the plumbing that carries your water and sewage! Do you care who makes the pipes? The agency CEO quickly put it into perspective… “If 3Com wants to spend $50 million to become a household name, we’ll gladly take the $50 million!” Some things never change. Particularly the ad agency business!
