As I write this post it is about twelve hours since England won it’s first match in the World Cup. This means that every pub in England will be running out of beer and crisps. This is about advertising, so bear with me. Crisps are what’s known in the US as chips. Everyone in England eats them constantly, particularly in pubs. Unlike here, crisps come in millions of flavors. Everything from Steak & kidney to Kippers & Custard. But they are all highly salted. ‘Cos that makes you drink more, right? Well, it would seem that Walkers, the biggest crisp company in the Empire has been getting complaints about its advertising for its new "healthier" crisps. The campaign featured Gary Lineker, star England footballer, holding a packet of ready salted crisps in one hand and a slice of bread in the other. A caption compared the salt content of the two products, saying both contained "as little" as each other. Turns out that was true of the kind Gary was holding, but the other ten thousand flavors had the equivalent of the Dead Sea in them. Anyway, in a bid to extend its range of healthier brands, Walkers has launched “Naked Crisps,” which are low-fat and contain no salt, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Which will not go down in the pubs of Britain, believe me.![]()
