"Big Beer" for the big Cannes Award!

AdWeek is listing the top ten contenders for the “UberTVSpot” in the upcoming Cannes Awards. Without a doubt, the best one is the Australian commercial for Carlton Beer produced by the George Patterson Agency of Melbourne. Titled “Big Beer,” it’s an “Homage” to a Lord of the Rings, totally over the top, blow the budget, extravaganza. Probably shot in the South Island of New Zealand with the requisite magnificent scenery, it must have cost a fortune. Whatever, it’s brilliant. The Tag line alone is worth the Plutonium/Titanium Best of Show award… “Made from Beer!” God, I wish I’d thought of that!biga0705.jpg

The ultimate tag line!!!

you're right george. Big Ad should win. best thing in ages.

but the brit ad geek contingent will ensure that either the yawny Honda stuff or Sony "balls" gets it. or the backwards guinness stuff. all of which cleverly avoid displaying any real emotion or humanity.

Its a great ad.
Really great ad.
Its a great ad its true.

That said, theres much to be said for the wonderful ads you mentioned there Veedub (less so the Guiness one).

I think the Sony Bravia ad has a surprising amount of humanity in it. The music for one is very emotive, and the sense of calmness with a hint of excitement is very human. Id love to see how it would appear with the original version of Heartbeats in.

sony "balls" is great film-making. no question. i just wonder how much of the spot's impact is based on the previous knowledge of it NOT being done on computer. how many viewers knew or cared about that? it probably just looked like yet another effect.

Its a good point, but I think the idea holds enough merit to work whether real or CGI.

I think that the knowledge of it being real (or at least mostly real) adds weight to the spot, just like the Honda Cog ad. People appreciate the effort and thought into doing these things for real. I like to call it the Jackie Chan effect :)

jackie chan effect. ha!

maybe that's why cog and balls get praise. we expect everything impressive to be fake. so the story that they're in fact real goes viral too.

I think thats pretty much it, it takes a good idea and gives it power and weight above that of an artificial version.

I suppose when you think about it, ads have to sell the truth, and what more truthful than reality.
