Having had the excruciating misfortune to have worked on the Oracle account in the past. I am always interested to read the latest doings of Uber Ego Maniac Larry Ellison, otherwise known as the “Shogun of Redwood Shores” because of his love of all things Japanese. Anyway, today it was announced that Oracle’s fiscal fourth profit rose 27 percent on record revenue as sales surged across most of its business lines and geographic regions. Coincidentally, it was also announced today that Shogun Ellison has yet to follow through on a verbal promise to give Harvard University $115 million to set up a research center for the study of global health. As a result, plans for the Ellison Institute for World Health at Harvard are on hold, and three senior managers who had already been hired have been dismissed. Ellison had previously been involved in another donation controversy. In 2001, Ellison talked with Stanford University about giving $150 million to create an institute to study technology's effect on politics and economics. Then Harvard began to vie for the money. So far, both universities are coming up empty. Maybe Larry needs the money for a new yacht.![]()
