How to turn kids off on the Internet!

In common with MySpace, the things that have helped YouTube's explosive growth and popularity will also undermine its ability to generate profit. Why? Because the kids that love MySpace and YouTube have grown accustomed to not only not paying for the service but also not having advertising clutter the screen with junk. MySpace has already started shilling for other “Wizened of Oz” owned media vehicles, and YouTube plans to introduce online advertising in the coming months. What these guys never think through is what it is that made these sites popular in the first place… No ads and free service. Plus, there are a growing number of similar sites out there that will remain free and carry no advertising. Murdoch’s millions may not have been spent wisely after all. Great thoughts, George. Kind of makes it tough to do business with "free" sites that don't even allow advertising on their sites, doesn't it? One has to wonder about the business model of such sites, but in the mean time it makes it tough for businesses looking to produce sales leads through these popular online sites.

Sorry about England and the World Cup, by the way...there's always 2010.

Good point Dan. I’ve been screaming that for a while. Don’t waht's worse though, the social site who bait and switch for so long, or the users who unrealistically expect free this, free that.

I think in the case of the latter, it’s an outgrowth of the Napster generation, (and beforethat ‘free satellite TV’). But when Napster first started offering free music, a whole new generation of users thought it was ok to grab for free whatever they want, using the simple excuse ‘well, it’s out there,’ without ever stopping to think that they were stealing.

If an artist want’s to give away his videos, MP3's or consert photos, fine. That’s their right, not the right of a third-party hacker exploiting a gap in the technology.

(Don’t know what’s...)

Geez, strike that whole post for typos. I may have been watching the UK too much.

;-p

The things that need to be done so that they can survive will probably change their entire demographic.

But to stay in their current form isn't an acceptable alternative financially.

Hey dad, you visited MySpace lately?

Good comments all. See my new post on Gather.com. I remember back in the late 90's When most of the agencies I was working at were pitching every dot com that came along. Nearly all of them were left holding the bag in unpaid bills... I just have a feeling it's starting to happen again. Murdoch doesn't make many mistakes, but I think the jury is still out on the millions he paid for MySpace... But then again, he's done a damn site better than me when it comes to investments. Come to think of it... Everyone has!!!
Cheers/George
