
OK. We just went through the World Cup, Wimbledon, and the Tour de France is still going on, and I’m as big a sports fan as anyone. But reading about “Brand – Le Bron James” in yesterday’s AdAge left me wondering how much “Sport” is left in sport these days. Seems like LeBron and his sports marketing company have big plans to make this “Basketball Icon” into a mega star for the United States Olympic team when it arrives in Beijing, China, for the 2008 Summer Games. Seems like he held the inaugural LRMR Marketing Summit at the University of Akron, with the sole purpose of nailing down as many sponsorship deals as possible before his legs or whatever give out and relegate him to being a retired multi-million dollar mega star. Remember when the Olympics used to be about sports? In fact, can you remember when any sport was primarily about sport?![]()
Ah yes, when I was a boy the Olympics were purely about sport!
