Speaking of famous people, there was an amusing piece in today’s Yahoo MarketWatch section about how Oscar presenters this year each walked off with over $35,000 worth of gifts in their goody bags, including four nights at Honolulu's Halekulani Resort, with a 24-hour butler, valued at $25,000. But hey guys… Those days of big time freebies ‘cos your multi-million dollars pay checks aren’t enough to keep up with your multi-million dollar charity donations, are coming to an end. From now on those kind of handouts -- not just at the Oscars but at other events around the country -- are going to find one extra item in each bag: an envelope from the IRS. And guess what? Even if you give all the tchotchkes to your PA, driver or bodyguard… You’re still liable for the tax. But you know, even though it might have publicity value for the companies giving the stuff away, it still smacks of excess and profligacy. Take the money and give it to a worthwhile charity or orphanage! You might even feel better for doing it.![]()
I feel the presence of a famous person... Mel, are you there?
