Has anyone out there wondered what the hell has happened to Karen Hughes? Talk about slipping off the radar screen. Remember how, with a great deal of fanfare, she was appointed “Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs” in 2005, replacing Charlotte Beers who I used to work with when she was Chairman-woman-person… whatever of JWT. Anyway, Ms. Hughes was tasked with changing the image of the US in the Middle East. Not the world’s easiest job at the moment. She immediately set of on a tour of Arab countries during which she pointed out to a questioner that “Our Constitution references One Nation under God.” Which it doesn’t! It actually says that in the Pledge of Allegiance, and that was added in 1954. Then when talking to female students in Saudi Arabia she wished that they could “fully participate in society,” to which one of the students replied “The image you have of Arab women is that they aren’t happy… We’ll, we’re all pretty happy.” Not an auspicious start to the job. Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard much of her recently. Not exactly great PR!
