The MySpace rot has begun with the launch of its first branded UK community based on Lynx deodorant. MySpace said that the Lynx profile would feature downloadable movies and games based on Towel Boy, a character from Lynx's latest marketing campaign. Describing himself as a 24-year-old semi-naked superstar, Towel Boy's MySpace page has videos of busty models ironing his clothes, and a Benny Hill type version of a mobile game, featuring Towel Boy luring scantily clad women into a nightclub. The word is that this is just the first of many deals “The Wizened of Oz” (Rupert Murdoch) has planned so he can start cashing in on his $580m acquisition. Jay Stevens, VP of sales at MySpace, said: "MySpace offers a unique platform for advertisers, which can help them identify their biggest brand champions and maintain an ongoing dialogue with them." In other word’s “Social Networking” is about to become “Social Marketing.” I guarantee, this will eventually lead to a loss of users as kids get turned off by overt commercialism and go looking for a less intrusive site.![]()
