Advertising, ad campaigns, ad agencies, and the people that make it happen

When I worked on the Qwest telecom account a few years ago, the agency, JWT, was based in New York and the client was based in Denver . We would fly out there for major meetings that needed serious face time, but for a lot of meetings we would hold video conference sessions. The technology then, and even more so now, made you feel like you were almost in the same room. So, when I read today that the three finalists for the $1.1 billion Fox Filmed Entertainment global media consolidation would be spending the next six or seven weeks flying around the world to make presentations in 14 local markets including Australia, Brazil, Japan, the U.S. and several regions in Europe. I had to ask myself, WHY? Even if they didn’t want to video conference it, why not fly all the Fox people to one central location, say London , and do it there? Can you imagine doing the same presentation 14 times in 14 countries with all the flying time and time changes, not to mention shifts in food and drink. Then the other thing I have to wonder about is who the heck is picking up the tab for all this… If I know anything about the “Wizened of Oz,” it won’t be Fox!
