Advertising, ad campaigns, ad agencies, and the people that make it happen

Considering that most people are still recovering from a surfeit of Christmas Pud, Nog and other assorted pieces of seasonal good cheer, I am surprised by all the attention Wikipedia has been getting over the last couple of days with the announcement from founder Jimmy Wales that he is planning on launching a search engine. Not that I doubt for one moment it would be a damn fine search engine, particularly as I am a huge fan of Wikipedia and use it regularly, as well as sometimes adding to and correcting entries… ‘Cos as my wife always says… I am a know all! I just wonder if it is all a bit late, as Google has really monopolized this space, and once the 800 pound gorilla is in the room, it’s awfully hard to replace it. But apparently a ton of VC money is going into it, so we’ll see. On the other hand, I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that the VC guys don’t really have a clue either. If they just spread money all over the table, eventually one of ‘em has to hit. Early days yet!
