Jeff Bezos's worst nightmare is about to come true!
Everyone thought that with the advent of Amazon, book stores such as Barnes & Noble and Borders would become a thing of the past. Now with the announcement of the “Book ATM” they might all be toast! In the very near future, buying a book could become as easy as buying a pack of gum. After several years in development, the Espresso - a $50,000 vending machine with a conceivably infinite library - will debut in ten to 25 libraries and bookstores in 2007. The New York Public Library is scheduled to receive its machine in February. The company behind the Espresso is called On Demand Books, founded by Jason Epstein, 78, and Dane Neller, 56, but the technology was developed six years ago by Jeff Marsh, who is a technology advisor for New York based ODB (ondemandbooks.com). The machine can print, align, mill, glue and bind two books simultaneously in less than seven minutes, including full-color laminated covers. It prints in any language and the page limit is 550 pages. Prices for a finished book will vary depending on locations, but the production cost is about a penny per page. Neller predicts that within about five years On Demand Books will be able to reproduce every volume ever printed. And at that kind of production cost with virtually no in-store stocking and overhead expenses, you could get every book ever published for an average of less than $7 to $10 a pop!

And can I get a mocha, frapaccino, latte, espresso, gelato with that War & Peace?

There is no reason for this to be a nightmare for Jeff Bezos. In fact, this should be like a dream come true for him since POD completely elininates the need for warehousing and inventory which is the most expensive part of book selling.

Amazon is already a POD publisher to some degree, but with these machines could go completely POD at their shipping locations and could also put Amazon-branded machines all over the country. The name recognition would get consumers interested in the new technology.
