It's not Bad TV. It's Celebrity TV. And if you don't like it... Too bad!

It strikes me as an unfortunate reflection on the viewing habits of the American public to read that ABC just renewed money-making show "America's Funniest Home Videos" for what will be its 18th season. And when you consider that it started just a few weeks after "The Simpsons" (A show that well deserves to still be enjoying its remarkable success) -- all back at the time when there was no UPN, WB, CW, iTunes, reality TV, and all the other forms of relentlessly awful content now available to anyone dumb enough to watch. Of course, when you consider that ABC is also renewing "Wife Swap," "Supernanny" and probably "Dancing with the Stars" and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," you realize that most of these programs cost peanuts to produce compared to regular sitcoms and legal/medicine/law & order etc series, you begin to realize why the networks love them. But I shouldn’t just come down on American audiences. The most watched TV series in the UK is “Big Brother” an embarrassing expose of a dozen people or so who agree to live together in a “sealed” house for a month, while cameras watch them 24/7 in the hope of catching them doing things you wouldn’t want your family to know about, let alone the entire population of the British Isles. I guess that’s why we confuse Puritan with Prurient!

George we are a strange group of TV watchers. It is intersting that some of us "older" viewers still watch "America's Funniest Home Videos," my kids (mid 30's)watch it and now my five year old grandsons find it funny. Yep we all like to see the other block look stupid.
