The news today that Goodby Silverstein has "parted ways" with its Saturn client doesn’t really surprise me. It’s just one more sign that the business is on a long slippery slope to ever increasing mediocrity. Adweek reports that GM’s Saturn brand would shift to Interpublic Group's Deutsch/LA in Marina Del Rey, Calif., without a review. Goodby picked up the account in 2002 and began the relationship with some great award-winning TV work, but has increasing had trouble selling through decent work to a client which, although starting off as a very “none traditional” auto company, as is always the way, retrogressed to yet another me-too, dumb American car company. Deutsch has been without a car account since it lost Mitsubishi two years ago. As the work they did for them was mediocre at best, I’m sure we can look forward to more of the same for Saturn. Even though Saturn was worth $200 million in billings, I am sure Goodby will take it in stride. They are, in my opinion, still the best large agency in the US.

Yeah, I remember Saturn, they went to Deutsch, then went bust a couple of years later!
