I have to be honest and go on record as not getting all this “Second Life” fuss. I know a lot of people are into it and we even have companies opening virtual offices there. Yes, American Apparel got quite a bit of publicity from it, but that’s because they were the first. Since then, others are questioning the ROI… Here’s what a Sun Computing exec had to say about using it as part of a new product announcement… “The Second Life thing, well, I don’t know. It was a lot of work to get going and it costs us real money, and then our pavilion can only hold 63 avatars, so the ROI seems questionable.” Couldn’t agree more, but even worse in my opinion is that not only are there a lot of strange people who would rather live in a make-believe world than in a real one, it also seems that most of the businesses which inhabit this virtual world are the same ones you want to avoid in the real one… Loan firms, realtors, insurance sales… C’mon, that’s what spam filters are for. Better than Second Life is the parody web site at Getafirstlife.com. Well worth a visit as it takes a very humorous look at the weirdness of this whole new world.
