I sometimes think back to what the Sundance Film Festival was all about when it first started sometime in the middle ages… Remember, it was the anti Hollywood film festival, where people who really cared about, and wanted to give film a slightly less obvious commercial slant, went to show their wares. And thank goodness for Robert Redford making it all possible. Then reading today how Airborne Cold Remedy took space there last year to hawk it’s patent medicine junk (‘cos there is no such thing as a “Cold Remedy!”) and drew 22,000 people into its event space, giving away 48,000 samples and 3,500 pieces of swag, including bright-yellow Airborne branded fleece scarves that were omnipresent throughout the 10-day film festival, I have to wonder what yesterday’s auteur’s must be thinking as they spin in their Studio Victorine graves. Even more so when you hear that this year the marketer of the so-called miracle “cold-fighting tablets” will be back with an expanded presence and a partnership with incredibly crass Hollywood news magazine "Extra." Oh dear, Mr. Redford, you don’t need the money that badly, do you?
