Your worst nightmare is about to come true. Anyone who’s ever spent much time in New York City knows that the only thing more uncomfortable, and certainly more dangerous, than riding the subway, is entrusting yourself to a New York Taxi. With the news that the Clear Channel Taxi Media and NBC Universal initiative will reach more than 14 million consumers through at least 5,000 New York City taxis when they are outfitted with LCD screens to display NY10, a new TV network, I am driven to ask… Why? Firstly, the driver is usually shouting into his cellphone to his brother in Pakistan or Somalia. Then, every few blocks he’s asking you the directions to your destination at Fifth and Fortieth. The suspension is so bad, there is no way your eyeballs could focus on a TV screen, and unless the screen was behind a bullet proof shield it would be either shattered or covered with stickers for massage parlors and strip clubs… No, the whole New York cab experience is one you want to end as quickly as possible rather than use it as an excuse to enjoy a dumb TV program. Then again, if the ads in the programming where for massage parlors and strip clubs it might work. Although, stickers would still be cheaper, and isn’t that what guerilla marketing is all about?
