After all the hoopla yesterday about the launch of Apple’s $600 iPhone, news today that Cisco is suing Apple for trademark infringement in a US federal court, for using the iPhone name. An Apple spokeshack claimed that the lawsuit was "silly" and that Cisco's trademark registration was "tenuous at best. There are already several companies using the name iPhone for Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) products. We are the first company to ever use the iPhone name for a cell phone, and if Cisco wants to challenge us on it we are very confident we will prevail." When you consider that Cisco has owned the trademark since 2000, they seem to have a pretty solid case. In fact Linksys, a Cisco subsidiary has used the trademark since early 2006, and in December it launched its own internet phone, called the iPhone. Still, as most Apple users are freaks for anything Jobs puts out there, they can call it the iSuck and they’ll still sell boatloads.
