Anna Kournikovia... A lesson in how to win big when losing!

Put this in the “You must be kidding” column, but when I read today that K-Swiss, manufacturers of tennis shoes and gear will be breaking a TV campaign in March featuring one of the world’s female tennis legends, I thought, OK, Stephie Graf, or Venus Williams, or someone of equal status… Then I read it’s Anna Kournikova who will be featured in the TV as well as print ads appearing in fashion and lifestyle magazines. And here’s the best bit… “Having an individual of Anna’s profile represent K-Swiss will serve as a huge asset for the brand,” Jennifer Weiderman, vp-marketing at K-Swiss, Westlake Village, Calif., said in a statement. “Her mix of athleticism and style will help us to reach out to consumers 13-30, while bringing the brand back to its tennis heritage.” Well, maybe, but only if your heritage is based on never having won a major tournament in your entire career. Wanna bet that if they had a golf range, they’d be paying millions to Michelle Wie?

So Michelle and I are playing doubles in the National Losers Championships. We won't win, but we'll make a fortune!

Do they really think they have a "I Want To Be like Mike" chance with this tired approach? How many 13 to 30 year old kids are even going to know who Anna Kournikova is or get excited about wearing what she wares, or doesn't? Is she even going to get enough sports media coverage at this point to even make an impression?

I agree, but I am amazed at all the attention she still gets. I don't think she's played for at least three years. If she was ugly, do you think it would be happening? As for Michelle Wie, if she doesn't get serious about her career, some of her big sponsors (Nike etc) will pull the plug. Why the hell doesn't she forget the mens tour for a couple of years, she's only hurting herself in the long run.
Cheers/George
