Why do I find it somewhat surprising to read that the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has called on General Motors to pull a TV spot in its "Obsessed with quality" campaign depicting a GM factory robot which dreams it gets laid off and eventually kills itself because of the shame of it all. Apparently, the group found the ad, which aired on the Super Bowl, "offensive and potentially dangerous." I still haven’t heard a peep from the unions, or indeed, the rank and file of GM’s workers, protesting that this particular spot strikes a little close to home when you consider that if the worse thing which can happen to a robot when it gets laid off is that it throws itself (several hundred pounds of scrap metal) off a nearby bridge… Then too bad. But, when a living, breathing family supporting human being gets laid off and they have little choice other than getting re-trained to flip hamburgers in a fast-food joint. Mmmm, why do I feel we seem to have got our priorities somewhat confused here!

I am not a robot. I am Paris Hilton. Well OK, maybe I am a robot. But, isn't that the same as being Paris Hilton?
