Why am I not surprised that caving in to pressure, General Motors will amend its TV spot in which a despondent robot commits suicide after losing his assembly line job, abruptly reversing a decision it had made last week to defy criticism from a suicide prevention group. It would seem that various Suicide Prevention societies had protested the spot which ran during the Super Bowl and had continued to run through the week, despite objections that it was insensitive to those touched by suicide. OK, I can understand some people being a little overly sensitive about that, particularly when TV is so violence free!!! Personally, I found it offensive because it gave no regard whatsoever to the thousands of GM employees who have lost their jobs, and the many thousands of others who will lose them in the future. This was about a robot… Lets’ start getting concerned about the thousands of human beings facing massive layoffs with the closure of so much of the nation’s factories.
