In the past I’ve ranted about the apparent lack of taste in the general public when it comes to TV programming, and how this has affected the price of prime time TV ads. Whether it be the awful attempts of sub-zero talented singers to become the next “American Idol” or those prepared to eat live cockroaches and be buried alive with poisoned snakes, or be marooned on a desert Isle for a month in order to win a pathetic prize. The same seems to apply to the movie industry, when at the time of writing, the three top box office movies are: “Ghost Rider” – “300” – “Wild Hogs.” All of which were slammed by the critics. Leading on to the next question… So, what’s the point of the media having movie critics, if the movie going public ignores them, and why are they ignoring them… Is it word of mouth recommendations from friends or like minded people posting on web sites… Leading on to yet another question… Someone has to see these bombs in the first place so they can them recommend them to all their brain dead friends. I’m confused. Can anyone recommend a good movie to me?

300 Hogs, Riding Wild with a Ghost... Or, something like that!

geoerge, 2 of the movies you mentioned were from successful comic books, that's a draw to theater already, think Constantine + Batman Begins + Superman, etc.
300 is just Lord of the Rings without the pomp and circumstance, just tons of heroic out-of-proportion derring-do and CGFX...and at the end of the day, that's what people like to see after toiling in the salt mines for 10 hours: something to take their minds off the pain they just endured. no big secret.
people like AO Scott, et al, need to remember that we ordinary folks don't need to be thrown into the depths of the human condition every time we cough up $20+ for date night at the movies. we just want to be entertained. Kurosawa's Rashamon is FANTASTIC! so is Jules & Jim...sometimes (most of the time) i just want to be transported away from my own human condition.
