Know More: Product launches

One of the biggest movie marketing successes of the last year has been the movie “Borat.” Not just in terms of box office revenues and low production costs, but also in the way the film was initially promoted and then merchandized after its release. The efforts are continuing with the release of the DVD. Because of the nationality of the movies main character and his devious approach to business, the DVD is intentionally manufactured to look like a bootleg, the art work colors are washed out and look like a bad Xerox copy of the original, there’s hardly any English text on it, and the disc inside looks like a burned copy with "Borat" scrawled on it in what looks like a Sharpie. It’s a particularly clever idea, particularly when you consider how much the rest of the industry complains about bootleg product. Very clever!
