If you’ve been wondering what Marc Andreessen’s been up to since he founded Netscape and was smart enough to sell it to AOL for $10 billion before the Microsoft juggernaut crushed it… Well, it would seem he’s about to jump into the social networking frenzy. With his new company, Ning Inc., a Palo Alto-based startup that he began in 2005 with former banker Gina Bianchini, he’s taking aim at MySpace.com and Facebook.com by helping users build online communities outside the walls of social networking leaders. Kicking off with a free toolkit designed to make it easy to launch a social network with a few mouse clicks. Ning's package includes all the usual social networking stuff - videos, photos, music, forums, personal profiles and blogs. Andreessen is convinced people dislike the big social networks' one-size-fits-all approach. With Ning, even first time users can customize their sites around particular interests, such as a hobby, sports interest, TV show, Or even a “Celebrities who shave their head” fan club. Maybe if he pulls this one off, he could sell it to “The Wizened of Oz’ for another $10 billion.
.
Maybe in my next movie, I could play the Emperor Ning!
