There’s been a lot of press recently about NASCAR’s shrinking appeal, to both race goers and TV watchers. All kinds of theories have been punted about why this is so. Everything from just too much of it, to it having a strictly regional appeal. Which is why proposed tracks in New York and Washington states look like they’re not going to happen. Now there’s a new take on it that happens to make a lot of sense. It’s just got too expensive for the average fan. Because the marketers and PR guys have jumped on the bandwagon and extended every race into virtually a three day affair, the cost of getting there, staying there, and existing there, has expended beyond the reach of the majority of fans. My theory is that it’s just too boring. Why would you want to see dozens of hulking great 700HP monsters charging around the same oval track 500 times? Anyway, I think everyone goes for the crashes. Not that they’d admit it! Standing by for the hate mail.
