Having lived in the US for a great many years, I have got used to the numerous "special days" celebrated here. From Halloween to St Patrick's day, people love to dress up and pretend they're something they're not. Unfortunately, few of these occasions actually involve getting time off from work... Mother's Day is a prime example. On that one day of the year Mum may get breakfast in bed, candy, flowers and many protestations of love. Advertisers will run campaigns going on about the priceless value of motherhood. Some economists even tally up the paycheck she should get for the services she performs. This year, salary.com estimates the value of a full-time mom at $138,095, up 3 percent from last year. The monetary value of a second-shift mom is $85,939, on top of her day job. Unfortunately for the great majority, the check wont be in the mail.

And don't expect overtime!
