Why the media will crucify Ron Paul!

Ron Paul is an interesting candidate for the Republican nomination. Unfortunately, he doesn't stand a chance for three reasons. First: He's honest and tells the truth, in politics that will get you nowhere, in American politics it can even get you killed. Second: He can't get the millions needed to run endless soporific, blatantly dishonest and patently nasty TV spots. That's because he will not put himself into hock to the vested interests who will expect pay-back when elected. Third: The media will destroy him, both left and right. Not that there's any real difference in this country. They'll do it by airing two second sound bites that take anything he says out of context. They'll continue to label him as an underdog with no chance. (When the Fox News poll during the Republican debate showed him winning - They stopped the poll!) They'll give ninety percent of their attention to the people THEY have labeled the front runners more than a year out. They'll do it because they can. But primarily they'll do it because the people who actually own and run the media will tell them to. Which is why you should thank God for the Internet and the fact that you can now express you're un-muffled opinion freely. It might take a few years, but one day the Murdoch's of this world will no longer be able to control the media world the way they currently do! If you don't believe me, just take a look at how he's screwing up MySpace and why so many people are moving to FaceBook!

There are a lot of anti-war Republicans. If they vote in the primaries, instead of sit this one out, maybe Paul could give a good run for the (non-) money.

Interesting you'd discuss (specific) politics on this site - brave, in fact. However, I don't believe it will be the media which sinks Paul's campaign; it will be people like me pointing out his ridiculous positions, such as (source: ronpaul2008.com):

"So called free trade deals and world governmental organizations like the International Criminal Court (ICC), NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and CAFTA are a threat to our independence as a nation."

"Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives."

No need for soundbites or dirty tricks, these are simply losing arguments.

But I welcome his taking a more sensible approach to other (boneheaded) Republican policies, such as the *war*, hopefully this will at least bring a modicum of sense to their platform.

not sure i would call those positions ridiculous. quite a few people hold those views. while i disagree with both of them, i respect his point of view. there certainly is an argument to made that our trade agreements have not been entireley in our best interest. and while i'm not a supply sider, there is a clear economic benefit to lower taxes, just check out any introductory economics text book.

David Blanar comments "it will be people like me [that sink Ron Paul's campaign by] pointing out his ridiculous positions, such as... Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives."

I'm confussed. Just what is "ridiculous" about this position statement by Ron Paul? Are lower taxes "ridiculous?"

I would like to ask David Blaner, as he goes about trying to "sink Ron Paul's campaign" to start being specific about what he finds "ridiculous."

Otherwise the only thing that he'll manage to sink will be other people's respect for his opinion.

I (of course) respect the fact people can hold those views. But perhaps the larger point is that we might consider thinking about someone other than ourselves?

We are not above the law (as in the case of ratifying the ICC); free trade stops wars (WTO); and we are the least-taxed people in the world relative to the services we demand.

Paul's two views on our international obligations and taxes are connected by arrogance and selfishness, which - yes - I think ridiculous. And not worthy of the promise of America.

But credit to Ron Paul where it is due: he's right on Iraq. I also liked him most of the Republicans in the debate I saw, which is saying something. I simply can't in good conscience vote for him.

Isn't it a shame the "We The People" do not think someone like Ron Paul who tells the truth, has integrity and principles can get elected?

Why are “We The People” so intent on electing officials that we know are going to lie, cheat and steal from us?

Why are “We The People” so ready to let ourselves continue to be duped by the political machine?

Free trade doesn't require WTOs or NAFTAs, free trade actually doesn't require any legistlation at all. Its just people trading with each other out of their own free will for prices they decide on, and that is what Ron Paul supports. And yes, free trade and interdependence do stop wars, which is something Paul has stated many times.

NAFTA, for example, is not free trade. USA subsidized agricultural exports have destroyed many jobs in Mexico, and subsidies under the WTO have similar effects to less industrialized nations.

There is some truth to the saying that NAFTA and the WTO threaten American sovereignty, since they dictate trade tariffs amd subsidies.

Any time you have economic or governmental power structures, the powerful will try to influence them out of their own self-interest. Given that free trade doesn't require any sort of management at all, I would agree with Paul that these organizations are not likely to be beneficial.

We are not above the law (as in the case of ratifying the ICC)

No. International Law is not above our own sovereign national laws. We are most definitely justified in asserting our prerogative to ignore any international laws which we regard as being contrary to our own preferred system of jurisprudence.

I also liked him most of the Republicans in the debate I saw, which is saying something. I simply can't in good conscience vote for him.

Since you are so opposed to Americans wanting to act in their own "arrogant" and "selfish" interest, I guess it makes sense that you would choose to vote with such admirably selfless altruism for someone other than the candidate you like the most!

Damn "G," I didn’t know an argument could be so incredibly accurate and simple at the same time. "Voting in ones self interest is selfish" Its completely true and makes old Billy seem a little bit silly when he correctly implies that wanting lower taxes and less outside influence is selfish. It is selfish, and that’s exactly why free markets and democracies are successful. For those of you who are intent on criticizing Ron Paul's positions, do all us a favor and read the constitution before doing so; you might learn a thing or two. If one does not agree with the contents of the constitution, maybe ones efforts should be focused on amending it instead of criticizing a pure constitutionalist. There is valid reason why so many are referring to Ron Paul as the Thomas Jefferson of our times. A deserving reference.

Ron Paul is a great, honest, intelligent, brave man.
Americans are lucky to have him run.
& he CAN win.
thanks

Ron Paul’s campaign slogan is “Hope for America”. And I do have hope for America. Most anyone who hears Ron Paul’s message becomes greatly inspired and wants to take action to pass on his message to anyone who will listen.

I believe we can overcome in a similar way that Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and our Founding Fathers who faced tough odds and succeeded in bringing positive change to the world.

Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.

Ron Paul is 1st in YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, Meetup, Google, etc. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.

Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!

‘Scientific Polls’ at this stage only measure name recognition. Over the next six months Ron Paul will gain name recognition and people will learn about who Ron Paul is. Most people who learn about Ron Paul become major supporters.

Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were doing about the same in the 'Scientific Polls' at this stage in their elections. Ron Paul has tremendous momentum and his support is growing exponentially. The other candidates are stagnant. Only Ron Paul's support is growing and will continue to grow!

Ron Paul is the classic Philosopher King as described in Plato’s Republic.

Ron Paul is the intelligent thoughtful Claudius after the insane evil Caligula and Tiberius.

Ron Paul is the principled Thomas Jefferson repealing and eliminating the abusive and unconstitutional Sedition Acts.

Ron Paul is the peaceful, patient, persistent Gandhi.

Ron Paul is the insightful Dwight D. Eisenhower who warned of the Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex.

Ron Paul is the man of integrity and courage that America needs at this time.

We are making history – Vote Ron Paul!

Protect yourself. It's too late to change the fact we are getting a new government. All the Internet is, is one giant fly trap. Protect yourself.

The media is giving Ron Paul a complete pass cause like them he's a Bush basher and opposed to the War in Iraq.

The media is completely ignoring his story, only scratching the surface.

So long as he keeps on bashing Bush and supporting a soft line on Islamo-Fascism the Liberal media will continue to give him glowing coverage, as they've been doing.
