I posted a couple of weeks ago about Dell's move into the retail space after almost an entire history of selling direct. Admittedly, this was only going to be a couple of stripped-down basic desktop models for under $700 available through Wal-Mart. But, as I said then, based on Wal-Mart's track record of putting vendors in an ever increasing vice like grip to deliver more product at increasingly shrinking margins... It might end up being the relationship from hell. Now there's word that Dell is considering going retail in India, China, Australia and Japan. All I can say, having worked on the Dell account for a good few years at Chiat, and knowing that Michael Dell is a really smart guy, is that this ain't the business model that built them into the world's number one PC manufacturer... But if anyone can reinvent themselves, my money would be on Michael Dell. Let's wait and see... It'll be interesting.
.
Let's just hope it's not a "Going Out Of Business" one!

Hi George,
As a Dell employee I think it's important to emphasize that we view our global retail strategy as a new and additional opportunity ... a customer-driven choice to augment our direct business which, indeed, has been very successful and still very much on our radar. Stay tuned! And let us know how you think we're doing several quarters from now.
