Today is the Fourth of July, Independence Day, which as you all know is a big deal for Americans, 'cos it's when you celebrate kicking us Brit's out a couple of hundred years ago before you got on with chopping down all the forests, building Levitt Town, and creating Paris Hilton. There'll be lots of fireworks, parades, and everywhere will be festooned in the Stars and Stripes, which for a country obsessed by its national flag, takes some doing, as every building, house and giant SUV flies "Old Glory" every day of the year anyway. It's also a given that all politicians wear a miniature gold flag pin in their lapel, particularly when they are on the stump raising money and running for office, which, irrespective of party affiliation, it seems to me they do 24/7, 365 days of the year. Every Presidential contender will also make an obligatory visit to a flag factory to guarantee a "photo op" with a twenty first century Betsy Ross stitching away at the old "Red, White & Blue." The problem is that in the very near future, they'll have to hop on a long haul flight to do it, as more than 97% of the flags and pins Americans love to display are now made in China. Good news on the fireworks front though, only about 90% of those are made in China!

Didn't get too much of this in the "pokie!"
