
With the news in today's AdAge that Andy Berndt, co-president of Ogilvy & Mather's New York office, is leavingthe agency to go to Google, where he will head up a new global unit aimed at collaborating with marketers, agencies and entertainment companies, I am left in no doubt that the "Mother of all Companies" is making plans to get into the agency business as part of it's strategy to control everything in the known universe. This not good news for Madison Avenue. Because there's no rerason to doubt that after a while it will decide to cut out agencies and deal directly with clients. The new global unit isn't being called an agency, but as AdAge points out, any unit offering creative consultation and account services could be considered one. And as everyone who's ever followed this company knows... Whatever Google wants... Google gets.
