One of the chapters in my upcoming book "The Ubiquitous Persuaders" deals with healthcare advertising and the veritable bonanza this has provided to both ad agencies and the media since Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) advertising was allowed by the FDA in 1998. So I was not surprised to read today that every single person in the USA is spending over $7,000 a year on health care. In return, they are getting some of the most cost-ineffective treatment in the Western world. Meantime Pharmaceutical companies claim that their drugs are so outrageously expensive because of their high R&D costs. Conveniently forgetting to mention they spend twice as much on their advertising and marketing. And of course the many medical conferences they host for health care professionals, which are usually in the Caribbean with lots of golf thrown in. Still, the last thing we want is "Socialized Medicine." Particularly if you work in the Ad Biz!
