Interesting news out of Brazil: Google will show images of the Amazon's deforestation in an effort that may pressure Brazilian authorities to halt the devastation, O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper said. The images will appear on Google Earth, the Web site that lets users observe buildings, streets, their own back yard and other interesting areas of the world via satellite, Estado said. Google decided to show the images after being approached by Almir Surui, the leader of the Surui indigenous tribe, Estado said. Google will initially show images of Surui's territory in the Brazilian Amazon state of Rondonia, I'm not quite sure what they hope to achieve with this. If it was tied into some kind of fundraising drive or promotion that lent it some urgency. But just simply posting the images with nothing to drive you there, or any incentive to take action, seems a bit redundant.
And if you don't stop chopping trees dow... We'll send Madonna!
