Perhaps the greatest marketing scam of all time has been the selling of bottled water. Not just because most of the high priced offerings are no purer than tap water... Many of them are tap water. Great piece in the Wall Street Journal talking about this and how Americans now spend about $11 billion on bottled water a year -- more than they spend on beer, milk or coffee. The story of how this shift in consumption habits happened, and why it matters, is what Elizabeth Royte sets out to tell in here book, "Bottlemania." Nice wrap up to the piece... Ms. Royte assures us in her final pages that "the vast majority of Americans . . . can keep drinking tap water without worry." Of course, the multinationals that have taken over the bottled water business, lock, stock & barrel may not be so sanguine!
Yeah, but the plastic bottle's worth at least two dollars!
